HIGH SCHOOL ART DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES iPHONE ART GALLERY
CATHOLIC MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL ART DEPARTMENT BRINGS STUDENT ART TO iPHONES GLOBALLY
JUNE 17, 2009 - WAUKESHA, WI – The Art Department at Catholic Memorial High School today announced the launch of the CMHS ART DEPARTMENT WALLPAPER GALLERY application for the iPhone.
The CMHS iPhone Art Gallery features ten digital images created by student artists, and is available via iTunes for 99˘.

"This is an amazing opportunity to bring the digital artwork of our student artists to a truly global audience via the iPhone," according to Kathleen Hanlon Sampon, an art teacher in the Catholic Memorial High School Art Department. "Since our iPhone Application went on sale via iTunes, it has been purchased by people around the world - and the money from sales goes to directly support our student artists!"
The CMHS ART DEPARTMENT WALLPAPER GALLERY features the artwork of ten student artists, delivered as mobile wallpapers directly to the picture library of the iPhone. The mobile art wallpapers are optimized for display on the iPhone, and all the images can be 'flipped' to reveal additional information about the respective student artists. This application also includes a unique PICTURE FRAME feature. Simply tap the PLAY icon on the toolbar, and
the iPhone is transformed into a digital picture frame which cycles through every image in the gallery at five-second intervals. The MOBILE PICTURE FRAME over-rides the auto-lock setting so users can enjoy an arty slideshow while the iPhone is docked and charging.
The CMHS iPhone application was created by START MOBILE, which is donating 100% of revenues from the sale of the mobile art gallery to the Catholic Memorial High School Art Department.
"Raising the money to fully fund our school’s budgets is increasingly difficult in this challenging economy," according to Kathleen Hanlon Sampon. "The added income from this innovative opportunity will help to ensure the ongoing strength of our department.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS EDUCATION
According to Americans for the Arts - http://www.americansforthearts.org - the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts in America, young people who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week through at least one full year are:
• 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
• 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools
• 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
• 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
• 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem
Young artists, as compared with their peers, are likely to:
• Attend music, art, and dance classes nearly three times as frequently
• Participate in youth groups nearly four times as frequently
• Read for pleasure nearly twice as often
• Perform community service more than four times as often
"The study of art enhances students’ interaction with life because it is directly connected to everything in a student’s mind, heart, and soul," according to Kathleen Hanlon Sampon. "The process of creating art involves critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, and meaningful creative expression - this is clearly an essential learning experience.”
